The Foundation

The SST Foundation was founded in 2001 by SSR Travel, Swiss Student Travel Office (cooperative), Zurich. Since its foundation in 1962, the cooperative SSR Travel became one of the leading tour operators in Switzerland. In 1998, the travel business was sold to the STA Travel Group, London. In 2004, the cooperative SSR Travel was dissolved.

The General Assembly decided to contribute a large part of the cooperative’s assets as capital to the SST Foundation. With this capital, the Foundation was entrusted with the long-term task of continuing the work towards the non-materialistic objectives of the cooperative SSR Travel.

The SST Foundation is a non-profit foundation and exempted from tax. As a foundation engaged in international activities, it is under federal supervision.

TO DO International Contest on Socially Responsible Tourism

TO DO Award
With the international ”TO DO Award“ contest the Institute for Tourism and Development (Studienkreis für Tourismus und Entwicklung) has since 1995 been awarding initiatives which enable local people to have a say and participate in tourism projects and service provision. From all the projects submitted an expert jury selects those to be shortlisted. Experts then go to check the selected projects on location.

The SST Foundation gives prize moneys of CHF 5,000.- to the winners, and a delegate of the board of SST is part of the jury. In addition, SST has since 2004 been one of the regular supporters of the TO DO Awards and supports this internationally renowned contest with an annual financial contribution of CHF 5,000.-.

TO DO Award Human Rights in Tourism
The TO DO Awards Human Rights in Tourism are awarded to initiatives, projects, and individuals that have shown extraordinary commitment to human rights principles along the touristic value chain. It is not possible to apply for the TO DO Award Human Rights in Tourism. An expert jury observes the market, selects potential award winners, and evaluates their efforts.

The winners of this award also receive prize moneys of CHF 5,000 from SST. In 2020 it was awarded for the first time.
